Glöckler run (Glöcklerauf ) in Ebensee on Lake "Traunsee"
Experience the unique original
in Ebensee am Traunsee
One of the most beautiful of the numerous Ebensee traditional events is the approximately one hundred and sixty-year-old "Rauhnachtsbrauch" (winter night) of the Glöcklerlauf. Ebensee is the centre and origin of this custom, which takes place every year on 5 January, the eve of Epiphany and the last Rauhnacht ("feiste Rauhnacht Perchta"). The purpose of the Glöcklerlauf is to win the salvation and blessing of the good spirits and to drive away the evil spirits.
The Glöckler groups, the so-called "Passen", arrive from the various districts of Ebensee in the town centre, in the section of VW Dorfner/Bahnhofstraße and the main road (in front of the municipal office) the Passes run their formations. It is also always a beautiful motif when the pass "Hoch Berggasse" pulls over the stairs from the Kalvarienberg to the town centre. It is also always very atmospheric when the brass band plays various nativity scenes on the balcony of the municipal office. It is quite an effort for the individual cap wearers to take part in the Glöcklerlauf, because the Glöckler parade through the village with caps weighing up to 20 kilograms, up to 2 meters high and 4 m long. To ensure that the evil spirits are really driven away, the bell ringers have tied large bells attached to leather belts, whose muffled sound is supposed to support the light.
Each cap is actually a small work of art. A few hundred hours of work are required for a cap. Several illustrators design the pictures. This is not so easy, because no motif may be used twice. Then the motifs are painstakingly cut out of construction paper, punched and glued back with colorful tissue paper. Inside the wooden scaffolding, several candles are attached to illuminate the bell caps. The traditional shapes of the caps are balaclava, five-pointed and seven-pointed.
At 18:00 hrs. sharp, a firecracker announces the start of the Glöcklerlauf, which takes place in all weathers. The collectors ask visitors for a voluntary donation, which will also be used for the new construction and design of further caps.
Due to its originality and tradition that has been maintained over all the decades, the traditional Ebensee Glöcklerlauf was named an Austrian Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2010.
If you would like to take a closer look at the construction and elaborate craftsmanship of such a cap before the actual event, on January 5 from 10:00 to 16:30 hrs. there will again be a Glöckler cap exhibition worth seeing in the large town hall hall. In the parish hall (from 10 a.m.) there will also be an exhibition by the Catholic Youth on Glöcklertag.
In the Museum Ebensee (open on January 5, from 13:00 - 17:00), a permanent Glöckler cap exhibition has been set up in the attic, which will be on display during opening hours.
