Hidden in the rock. The Mountain, the Salt & the Art

Narratives in images have always offered a unique access to our history. The German comic artist Simon Schwartz is a master at this and makes contemporary history come alive up close. He has packed the eventful history of the Altaussee salt mine from the Stone Age to the Nazi era, as well as the art treasures stored in the mountain and their spectacular rescue into a graphic novel.

Simon Schwartz: Comic artist, author and illustrator

Simon Schwartz is one of the best-known German comic artists. He made his debut in 2009 with "drüben!", the touching graphic novel about his parents' departure from the GDR. His book "Packeis" was awarded the Max and Moritz Prize in 2012. For the Stasi memorial in Erfurt, he designed a 7 x 40 metre picture frieze. In 2017 and 2019, the German Bundestag honored him with solo exhibitions.
