Participating in the Schafberglauf is worthwhile because it is a unique challenge in which runners compete against the historic SchafbergBahn, offers a spectacular view of the Salzkammergut and the goal is a trail run on one of the highest mountains in the region, making it one of the toughest mountain runs in Austria.
The run is a direct test of strength between runners and the historic SchafbergBahn. With gradients of up to 26% and an altitude difference of 1,240 meters, it is one of the most challenging mountain runs in Austria.
Since 2022, the run has been held as a trail run on the hiking trail, which gives it an additional appeal. The route offers an incomparable view of the surrounding Alps and the five lakes of the Salzkammergut. The Schafberg itself is an important tourist destination with the oldest mountain hotel in Austria. The run is a challenge for real "calf biters" who want to push themselves to the limits. The Schafberglauf is known for the fact that real extreme athletes are spurred on to top performances here.
