The special thing about Lake Wolfgang Advent is the mixture of romantic atmosphere and traditional authenticity, which is created by several unique features: a huge, floating peace light lantern, the boat trip between the illuminated places (St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Strobl) and the thematic design of the individual markets. St. Wolfgang scores with a down-to-earth nativity scene and traditional lighting, St. Gilgen with an 11-metre-high candle by the lake and Strobl with its nativity village.

Radiating far across Lake Wolfgangsee through the dark winter nights, the inviting, peaceful glow of the lantern draws guests from near and far to contemplate in, wonder at and enjoy the Lake Wolfgang Advent (Christmas) Market. There is a joyful anticipation of Christmas in the air and visitors are able to experience fascinating customs still in practice today. The Lake Wolfgangsee Advent (Christmas) Market is celebrated in St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang annually and this year is no exception.
In the village of St. Wolfgang candles, torchlight and warming braziers lend a cosy atmosphere and the solid, rustically-decorated Market stalls meander from the Postplatz Square to the lakeside, whilst in the Mozart village of St. Gilgen the visitor can expect a baroque backdrop to the Advent scene. A joi de vivre and a joyful anticipation of Christmas are depicted on the Market stall facades – designed by artist Raja Schwahn-Reichmann. The idyllic village of Strobl, however, is romantically transformed into something very special – featuring exquisite Nativity-scenes.
Advent by Boat
Lake Wolfgang plays a very special role during Advent – because only here can you comfortably and atmospherically reach the festively decorated Advent villages by boat. A trip across the wintry lake, past glittering lights along the shore, is an experience that can only be found on Lake Wolfgang.

The Schafberg Railway is once again part of the Advent program this year. It invites you on a nostalgic ride to the Schafbergalm – an unforgettable excursion with magnificent views over the wintry Salzkammergut region.
A Moving Advent Calendar
A very special highlight is the "moving Advent calendar" on the Zwölferhorn cable car: 12 red and 12 yellow gondolas transform into illuminated Advent windows, each offering a small surprise for guests of all ages. In just eleven minutes, you reach the summit, where mulled wine, hearty delicacies, and a breathtaking mountain and lake panorama await. An atmospheric light installation also provides a perfect photo opportunity. From the mountain station, the Pillstein circular trail leads through the enchanting winter landscape at the Hörndl – ideal for a contemplative stroll.
The symbol of the Wolfgangsee Advent
The floating Advent lantern, standing 16 meters tall, is the symbol of the Wolfgangsee Advent – and also the tallest structure on the lake. Inside, approximately 500 meters of LED light strings illuminate the Wolfgangsee, bathing it in a warm, festive glow.
Every Wednesday – “When it gets dark in the village”
As darkness falls, the village awakens with a special radiance. Tradition, music, and lights create a unique atmosphere on the shores of Lake Wolfgang.
