Solstice bonfire in the Salzkammergut
Around 20 June – when the longest day and the shortest night meet – mountain fires are lit in many places. And so an old custom is being rediscovered in this highly modern digital age: The summer solstice is an old custom from the Middle Ages. As early as the 14th century, fires were lit on the mountain ridges in Austria to give thanks for the rich harvest.
An unforgettable mountain experience
On the weekend around the longest day ("solstice"), the "mountains in flames" are on fire in the Salzkammergut every year. The solstice is traditionally celebrated around the longest day of the year. This time is also associated with other customs. One of the most beautiful fires is lit on the Feuerkogel in Ebensee.

Experience your shortest night of the year on the mountain
On Saturday, 21st of June 2025, as every year, a large solstice fire will be lit on the Feuerkogel high plateau at 1,600 m above Lake Traunsee. An atmospheric start to summer is celebrated with a traditional solstice fire, regional live music and a great supporting programme for the whole family.
At 16:00 hrs. and 18:00 hrs. there will be a "guided alpine hike". The starting point is at the Photopoint near the mountain station of the Feuerkogel cable car. Participation is free of charge and no registration is required.
Some of the mountain inns offer live music and, as always, regional delicacies. There will also be musical accompaniment directly at the solstice fire from 21:15 hrs. Continuous cable car operation until 23:00 hrs..
Whether locals or guests, it doesn't matter what language they speak. Everyone is looking forward to the big solstice fire on Mount Feuerkogel in Ebensee, and they? Will they be there?
