"Break with hungry men thy bread" - The Salzburg Expulsion of Protestants in 1731
The infamous emigration decree signed by Salzburg Archbishop Firmian in 1731 set a high point among the Protestant expulsions that forced numerous Protestants to leave their homes in Salzburg and the Salzkammergut between 1580 and 1837. J. S. Bach is said to have performed his cantata "Break with hungry men thy bread" for a group of these exiles in Leipzig. A cross-section of the music of this cruel time is offered by Gordon Safari and his outstanding ensemble BachWerkVokal.
