Contemplative insights into history, customs and unique nativity scene art

The idyllic district of Lauffen in Ischl invites you to a special themed tour during the Advent and winter season 2025/26. Every Friday at 2:00 p.m. from December 12, 2025 to January 30, 2026, visitors will gain exciting insights into the history of Lauffen, the impressive parish church and the traditional nativity scene museum in Lauffen.

Handmade tradition and customs

The special thing about the nativity scenes in the Bad Ischl district of "Lauffen" is their depth in folk culture, often room-filling landscape nativity scenes with hundreds of figures that depict regional life (traditional costume, crafts) and create a world of their own through movable figures and loving details; they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the tradition of nativity scene building was shifted from the church to the private sphere by bans in the 18th century, creating a unique home nativity scene culture. They are often large, detailed scenes that not only show the birth of Christ, but also depict the entire environment with its inhabitants, animals and customs. Many nativity scenes, such as the famous Kalss nativity scene in Bad Ischl, contain mechanically movable figures that bring the events to life. The figures are often dressed in traditional Salzkammergut costumes, show craftsmen, farmers and other local types who reflect the world of work.

More about the tour and the guided tour

The meeting point is at the entrance gate of the museum (Lauffner Marktstraße 21), where the tour begins. Tickets are available at the location. After an introduction to the historical significance of Lauffen, the tour continues to the church, before a short introduction in the inner courtyard of the museum creates the transition to the nativity scene. The tour concludes with a visit to the Nativity Museum, the entrance to which is already included in the ticket. The total duration of the tour is a maximum of 1.5 hours.
