Information on church history
Every Sunday morning, the Catholic Church of Gosau invites guests and locals to the traditional Sunday mass. A "house of the Lord" with an ancient history: As early as 1231, there was a wooden chapel on the "Kirchschlag", which belonged to the mother parish of Abtenau. The current Catholic church - it hides a baroque altar and a beautiful figure of St. Sebastian behind the Gothic archway - was built between 1500 and 1507. Since Gosau did not yet have its own cemetery at that time, the dead had to be laboriously brought to Hallstatt. Friction has repeatedly arisen: the people of Hallstatt, who themselves suffer from a lack of space, sent the funeral processions back several times. In 1543, the first chaplain of Gosau was appointed, who was then also allowed to carry out funerals in the village.
The legend of the origin of the church is interesting: It is said that it was also originally planned at the church. The building site was marked with a large wooden cross, but it disappeared again and again and appeared above the Taferngut. It was seen as a sign from God. In reality, however, it is said that the clever church landlord is said to have "diverted" the construction of the church to his neighbourhood for business reasons.ley!
