The Natural History Museum Vienna and Salzwelten Hallstatt invite you to the annual "Archaeology on the Mountain" event weekend in the Hallstatt High Valley.
This year, the focus is on 7,300 years of salt transport. How did the coveted "white gold" make its way from Hallstatt to vast regions of Europe over the millennia? Discover the evolution of salt transport—from dugout canoes and pack animals, through historic brine pipelines and the railway, to the new funicular and modern logistics systems.
At the "Old Forge" (Alte Schmiede)—an NHM Vienna outpost on the Hallstatt salt mountain—you can look forward to historical demonstrations, hands-on stations, and fascinating insights into current archaeological research. Try out prehistoric tools, watch the boring of wooden brine pipelines, boil brine yourself, or step into the clothing of Hallstatt miners.
Numerous experts will share insights into their research, bringing 7,300 years of salt history to life right at the original site.
