From house to house
through the historic Hallstatt

In Hallstatt, carol singers parade through the streets every year around Epiphany to collect for charity. The parish of Hallstatt has been carrying out the traditional Epiphany campaign of the Catholic Youth Group since 1961. The custom goes back to a medieval custom in which the entry of the Three Kings was re-enacted. The current form as a fundraising campaign was introduced by the Kindermissionswerk.

The carol singers dress up as the Three Kings, whose names are Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. These names were not handed down until the Middle Ages, and the Bible also calls them only "wise men from the East" or "Magi".

The carol singers wear royal robes and leave the blessing in the form of the inscription "C+M+B" (Christus Mansionem Benedicat – Christ bless this house) on the doors. They sing songs and poems and offer incense. The Catholic parish of Hallstatt is responsible for the organization.
