Wake-up call from the Hallstatt Salt Band

Date: Thu, May. 1, 2025
Time: 06:00
Location:  Hallstatt, 4830 Hallstatt
The musical wake-up call of the Hallstatt brass band accompanied by loud shots from the Hallstatt Shooting Club. Everyone gets out of bed!

With "Timpani & Trumpets"

A holiday in the Salzkammergut is only enjoyable when you can immerse yourself in the tradition of the country and its people. A fixed point in the customs calendar of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut is the musical wake-up call on 1 May. On these days, the musicians of the Hallstatt Salinenkapelle get up very early, slip into their festive uniforms and parade with "timpani and trumpets" through the "most beautiful lake town in the world", as it was aptly called by the world traveller Alexander von Humboldt at the beginning of the 19th century.

The morning music event is accompanied by the local Schüzuen club with numerous shots and volleys. A special sound experience. Especially when the shots find their echo in the narrow valley basin over the lake.

So if you hear cheerful sounds in the early morning during your holiday in Hallstatt – don't be alarmed! This is the salt music of Hallstatt. They just want to play!

Historic

The salt music is as much a part of Hallstatt as the numerous sights of the ancient salt production site in the heart of Austria. The "Salinenmusik" (name of the brass band) is one of the oldest chapels in the Salzkammergut after the "Bürgermusik Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt" (name of the brass band), which was founded in 1834. In the region between the imperial Bad Ischl and the tradition-conscious Ausseerland, the formation is one of many factory bands. It was integrated into the salt works until 1983, when the association was founded. While the band was founded by miners in 1837, today hardly any members are actively employed by Salinen Austria AG (Name of the company that mines the salt in Hallstatt). This joint-stock company based in Ebensee, which still supports the "Musi" today, is not only known throughout Austria in the region for its successful salt mining, but also operates one of the most successful sights in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut. All year round, the "Bergmann Orchestra" invites visitors and guests from all over the world to a musical rendezvous on land and water. The repertoire ranges from traditional marches to current pop music. But musical wake-up calls on selected holidays are also on the program of the numerous musicians. So open your ears for the Salinenmusikkapelle during your holiday in Hallstatt. We'll hear you!
