Raising of the Maypole in Hallstatt
It's time to celebrate
Every year on the eve of May 1st, the strongest men of Hallstatt meet to fulfill a very special custom.
Accompanied by traditional music, tasty drinks and down-to-earth food, the approximately 20 to 30 meter high, magnificently decorated maypole is lifted up by the strong male images near the bathing island, in the southern part of the old salt production site. And you can be there live!
To the roots
But what is this tradition all about, which takes place in many towns and villages every year on the last day of April? Where does maypole erection come from?
The erection of the maypole may have its origins in pagan customs, with the Germanic tribes worshipping their forest deities. The maypole was first mentioned in writing in 1230. In the Middle Ages, as a legal symbol, he pointed out that the fields were not allowed to be entered until the harvest. Later, it was banned in many places as the "witch tree". The custom of debarking the trunk so that no witches can hide underneath it also dates back to this time. However, the American and French Revolutions brought back the maypole as the so-called Liberty Tree.
Therefore, the maypole custom is still very much local today, although the political aspect has taken a back seat. Instead, folk entertainment is the order of the day – and the maypole is also considered a symbol of fertility and life, which reawakens with nature in spring.
