Not for the faint hearted
Now for the third time, the best and hardest ice swimmers will meet in December on the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt. The ice cold Advent Event!
More than 50 athletes from eight different countries participated last years, although with a water temperature of just over 7 degrees, it was almost too warm for the ice swimmers. However, you have to raise your hats to every participant who dared to take the plunge. In some cases the athletes, who participated in the individual competitions, were in the water for more than 20 minutes.
On Saturday 12th December 2020, there will be a new edition of the "Lake Hallstatt Ice Swimming" in the Obertraun “Strandbad”.
"Ice swimming" is becoming
more and more a trend!
The interest is already there. With six weeks to go before the competition, registrations are already running quite well for each of the seven competitions that have been announced. Competitors can choose from 50 m breaststroke and crawl, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 m crawl, as well as the mixed relay which is especially entertaining for the spectators. For the competitions, a 50-meter competition pool with 4 lanes will be built parallel to the shore. Spectators will have a good overview of the ice swimmers from the beach area.
"The participants are only dressed in swimming trunks and caps!
“There are no safety concerns, the participants know exactly what they are letting themselves in for” explained organiser Bernhard Höll. Nevertheless, safety is a top priority, which is why a doctor and the Red Cross will be present at this unusual sporting event.
Advent mood by local craftsmen!
While the swimmers compete in the cold water, the visitors can warm themselves with warm drinks and local specialties. During the day, for the first time this year, local craftsmen will be exhibiting their regional products and offering them for sale, bringing a pre-Christmas atmosphere to the Obertraun beach.
