The traditional setting up of the maypole in Obertraun is, as always, carried out by the Obertraun mountain rescue service. The tree, which was felled in the forest and donated by a patron, is transported to the community square around 6 p.m., after a traditional snack provided by the Koppenrast inn, and is erected there by the Obertraun mountain rescue service using pure muscle power, also with the help of the population. A cozy get-together and the traditional guarding of the maypole until midnight (and longer) conclude this popular event. The Obertraun mountain rescue service provides excellent food and drink!
To the roots
But what is this tradition all about, which takes place in many towns and villages every year on the last day of April? Where does maypole erection come from?
The erection of the maypole may have its origins in pagan customs, with the Germanic tribes worshipping their forest deities. The maypole was first mentioned in writing in 1230. In the Middle Ages, as a legal symbol, he pointed out that the fields were not allowed to be entered until the harvest. Later, it was banned in many places as the "witch tree". The custom of debarking the trunk so that no witches can hide underneath it also dates back to this time. However, the American and French Revolutions brought back the maypole as the so-called Liberty Tree.
Therefore, the maypole custom is still very much local today, although the political aspect has taken a back seat. Instead, folk entertainment is the order of the day – and the maypole is also considered a symbol of fertility and life, which reawakens with nature in spring.
