Our tip: During your visit to the Salzwelten in Hallstatt, we would greatly recommend a detour to the Hallstatt Sky Walk. This spectacular viewing platform sits high above Hallstatt and offers an idyllic panoramic view of Lake Hallstatt and the breathtaking alpine landscape ranging from the Sarstein to the Plassen mountains.

Please take note that depending on the season, the operating times for the funicular to the Salzberg (salt mountain) and the visiting times for the Salzwelten vary. The “Salzwelten” Salt Mine in Hallstatt offers a very special service for anyone who has other plans. In the new shop, near the bus terminal, visitors can purchase their ticket for the “Salzbergbahn” cable car or a tour of the oldest salt mine in the world simply and easily before they start their tour of Hallstatt. Then there is more time to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the town and long waiting times at the cash register are a thing of the past. See you in the new “Salzwelten” Ticket Shop in the Sparkasse house!

Hallstatt - Small village with a great history

The picturesque village on the lake with the same name owes its existence to the rich salt deposit of salt in the mountain of Hallstatt. 7000 years ago, as the prehistoric humans from Hallstatt began to take the salt from the salt mine who would of guessed, that this little village would give its name to a period in history – the Hallstatt period (800-400 BC). Rich findings in Hallstatt and the upper valley of Hallstatt gave this village international recognition; even today discoveries are still made in the salt mountain of Hallstatt. Among the most beautiful places of interest are the oldest salt mine in the world and the ossuary in Hallstatt, a romantic boat ride on Lake Hallstatt, a trip to the breathtaking cave world in Obertraun and a visit to the Lake Gosau with the mighty Dachstein glacier. Additionally, Bad Goisern is popular in the summer with hikers and bikers. In winter guests are lured in by the ski areas of Dachstein West in Gosau and the Ski and Freeride Arena in neighboring Obertraun with perfect slope conditions. Water and wood are also determining factors; without them there would be no salt production. But salt and water are also vital for our bodies. Our organism consists of 65% water and requires a daily ration of at least five grams of salt. After all, salt and water are actually enemies that devour and dissolve each other and are condemned to exist symbiotically until they are perhaps separated again in a “Sudhaus” (brewhouse).

"Sudhaus" is the central art exhibition of the Capital of Culture. With international and national participation by renowned artists, an extremely broad spectrum of themes is presented, introduced by documents from regional history. The themes of salt and water are presented with different facets and approaches in the form of objects, sculptures, installations, film, photographic and sound works.

Part of the show refers to the "Open Water Dialogues" conference, which deals with burning issues such as disappearing glaciers and the increasing scarcity of water worldwide.

Narratives in pictures have always offered a unique approach to our history. The German comic artist Simon Schwartz is a master at this and makes contemporary history come alive up close. He has packed the eventful history of the Altaussee salt mine from the Stone Age to the Nazi era into a graphic novel. This can be seen from 22 March 2024 until October in a freely accessible exhibition in the Steinberghaus. And of course, the graphic novel is also available in book form.

Dear visitors, please note that there will be road closures on Sunday, 28 April 2024. The reason is the sports event "Hallstatt Lake Circuit 2024". The Hallstatt main road (L547) and the Pass Gschütt main road (B166) will be temporarily closed.

Bus connections are also affected by the closure. There is no bus service from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl or Gosau between 10:30 and 13:00. Please take this into account when travelling to and from Hallstatt.

Everyone's at the start

In 2024, numerous runners from Europe and the world will once again take to the track at the Lake Hallstatt Half Marathon. Whether young or old, experienced or rookies - they are all looking for a sporting challenge in the heart of the Salzkammergut. For some it is the first time, others do the honours every year and combine the run with an extended weekend in the "most beautiful lake town in the world", as the world traveller Alexander von Humboldt noted at the beginning of the 19th century.

Well taken care of

For many runners, one of the most beautiful sections of the approximately 21-kilometre-long course is the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt. Along the entire route from Hallstatt via Obertraun and Bad Goisern back to the World Heritage site, numerous eager helpers are waiting for the challengers with refreshments in various so-called refreshment stations.

Marketplace celebrates the fastest

Whether followers or visitors - everyone is looking forward to the award ceremony at the end as part of a party on the picturesque market square of the salt works. Here, everyone comes together once again for cool drinks and traditional delicacies. In addition, there are attractive prices, provided by domestic commercial enterprises. And if the weather doesn't play along that day, the running circus simply moves to the nearby cultural center.

Catholic Church of Hallstatt

The catholic parish church in Hallstatt is a beautiful gem in the midst of the world cultural heritage village. the small Romantchurch dates back to 1181, its powerful tower dating back to the 12th century bears witness to this fact. Daringly built in the late Gothic times high up on a rock with a steep drop became finally in 1505 the existing church of today.

Shortly after the church became the centre of the fight for faith and was, for a while, protestant. It remained however the always a gem in the heart of all the salt miners and wealthy salt mine lords from Salzburg, in the market square or in the yard. Since 1939 the maintenance of this gem has been in the hands of the small church community along with friends and visitors.In the year 2002 the catholic parish church was completely renovated.

In these days of the big supermarket chains and discounters, the small shopping opportunities stand out in even more. Fresh products without artificial additives. Fresh from the many small, down-to-earth producers from the Salzkammergut. Now Hallstatt also invites you to a small but fine weekly market with culinary delights from the region. Every Tuesday morning from 7:00 until 12:00 the marketeers invite to the Hallstatt “Badeinsel” (bathing island) for a tasty market morning.

New from 1.5.2024: The Schönbergalm (name of the alpine pasture) presents itself with a new concept especially for families and groups. For the first time in the history of the Dachstein Salzkammergut mountain railways, the mountain railways will operate the restaurant themselves, as well as the Dachstein Krippenstein mountain restaurant from 11 May 2024 with an equally new concept and unique cuisine with a mix of regional, seasonal and international specialties at 2,100 meters above sea level with a view of the Dachstein glacier.

The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt has been awarded as one of the best Austrian summer mountain ranges. By fulfilling 160 criteria, the Dachstein Krippenstein has been certified as one of the best Austrian summer mountain railways. The seal of approval is a promise of quality to the guests and the region. The Dachstein Krippenstein was able to convince with innovative offers such as the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, the Mammoth Cave, the 5fingers viewing platform and the World Heritage Spiral.

The seal of approval is an initiative of the Association of Cable Cars of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and has stood for quality, cooperation and the sustainable development of the alpine mountain summer for over 20 years. Only those mountain railways that guarantee their guests innovative and carefree nature experiences on the mountain through a variety of offers are awarded. The Dachstein Krippenstein was particularly convincing in the category Panorama & Nature Experience.

A wonderful world of ice

The Castle of the Holy Grail, Parsifal Dome and King Arthur’s Dome: all of these fairytale names conceal fascinating scenes of ice and stone which you can enjoy at close range during a visit to the ice cave. Accompanied by experienced cave guides, you can explore the magical underground world of Dachstein. The spectacular ice sculptures, gigantic ice curtains and impressive giant icicles never fail to captivate with their special magic! A mystical cave of ice and rock which enchants even the youngest guests of magical cave.

Guided tour through Dachstein Ice cave

The Dachstein Ice cave lies high above the Trauntal valley and is just a few minutes’ walk away from the Schönbergalm. The ice is formed by water which seeps from the Dachstein plateau down into the cave through small cracks and joins in the cliff. When outside temperatures lie above freezing but the caves still contain very cold air, the penetrating water freezes and forms magnificent ice shapes which define the magic of the giant Ice cave.

Even when the water which seeps into the cave is warm in Summer, leading to a slight melting of this ice, the overall balance is one of growth; the Winter-Spring growth exceeds the Summer-Autumn ice loss and thereby guarantees the survival of this magnificent natural showcase. Visitors can submerse themselves inside this world of natural wonder during 50 minute tours, experiencing the magic of this ice landscape at close hand. Experienced guides lead guests through ice-free passageways and a stalactite hall down to ‘St. Arthur’s Dome’. Here in this hall, dominated by powerful blocks of rock, the bones of cave bears have been found which bear signs of human processing.

Stairs through the narrow keyhole make it easier to access the higher level of the cave with its fantastic ice formations which form the highlight of a visit to the cave. From the ‘ice palace’, the route leads on to the ‘Parsifal Dome’ and to the ‘Big Ice Mountain’ – a ball of ice over 9 m tall. From here, it’s on to the powerful bell of the ‘Castle of the Holy Grail’ which shimmers in colours from white to dark blue, depending on the lighting.

A connecting passageway runs along the 25 m thick ice floor of the adjacent ‘Tristan Dome’ while the descent down to the ‘Big Ice Chapel’ based on the cave ice creates a lasting impression of underground beauty. Then walking past the ice abyss (overcoming this was the greatest obstacle to researching this cave), visitors reach the exit with beautiful views of the Krippenstein and Hallstättersee lake.

Further information

When visiting the caves (only permissible with a trained guide), we recommend that you wear robust shoes and warm clothing. Temperatures in the Ice cave rarely exceed freezing point and in the other caves there is only an average temperature of 4 °C.

Cave labyrinth of superlatives

The endless expanse of the Dachstein massif from inside – the giant Mammut Cave is sure to impress with its vast size and interplay of colours – something you would never expect to see beneath the ground in of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut in Austria! The name ‘Mammut Cave’ (Mammoth cave) was chosen by explorers due to the astonishing dimensions of the underground spaces and passageways contained within this cave system. At present, more than 70 km of these passageways have been explored – around 1 km of them can be viewed during the guided tours.

This exciting tour awaits you in the Mammut Cave

During 1 hour tours of the Mammut Caves, visitors gain insight into how the caves developed and the work of the cave researchers. They learn how powerful volumes of water once gushed through the mountain as well as the problems which confronted cave researchers in the ‘Midnight Dome’ during their multi-day expeditions of the inside of the mountain. In this ‘Kingdom of shadows’, there are no boundaries to the imagination. Here, nature has created its own images from the white mountain milk and brown iron oxide, generating names such as ‘Cave Venus’ and ‘Woman with Hooped Skirt’. And finally, installations from the Linz University of Art (such as the incidence of light and cave scan projects) never fail to impress.

Art in the mountain

Light and shade in the Mammut cave – the ‘Laser scan’ and ‘Incidences of light’ installations captivate in the endless gloom of one of Europe’s largest caves. A swivelling laser beam highlights the surfaces of the cave and brings to life bizarre aluminium objects through the interplay of light and shade. Particularly impressive is the projection of a mediaeval church window which emerges from the cliff as if from nowhere. Plenty of surprises guaranteed!

The history of the Mammut Cave

The West entrance to the Mammut Cave was used as a cellar for many centuries. Poachers, once numerous in the Inner Salzkammergut area, also used the area to store any game they caught. In 1910, exploration began of the seemingly endless corridors of the Mammuth Cave from the western side. On the East side, facing the ice cave, several ice entrances were identified which were finally linked with the western section in 1914. The First World War brought a halt to the research activities. After the end of the war, the military built a route through the Mammut Cave which was then improved over the decades which followed.

Today, over 60 km of the Mammuth Cave have been researched. The impressive size of the passageways and the hope of finding one of the longest caves in Europe prompted researchers to choose this name (transl. Mammoth Cave). Over the last few years, artistic installations have made the Mammut Cave even more attractive and the Dachstein caves are now impressing visitors with their new look.
