Museum of the City of Bad Ischl
Country and people
The Museum of the City of Ischl is housed in a truly historic building and invites you to take a stroll through the city's history! The collection of the city of Bad Ischl is housed in the former inheritance house of the Seeauer salt merchant family, which later became Hotel Austria. The young Emperor Franz Joseph and Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria celebrated their engagement in this building. In 1982, the building was acquired by the city of Bad Ischl, and in 1989 the city museum was able to open.
The development of the town of Bad Ischl is shown, especially the importance of salt production and the rise of the place to a spa and imperial summer residence. In the themed area of Ischl as a health resort and imperial summer residence, original uniforms and objects of Emperor Franz Joseph, hunting rifles and numerous paintings are presented. Traditional folk culture is dedicated to farmhouse parlours with original furnishings, uniforms and objects from local associations. The centuries-old customs of the Salzkammergut with the Glöcklerlauf, carnival customs or sword dance are also presented.
An outstanding part of the museum is an East Asian collection that the world traveler and hotelier Hans Sarsteiner brought back from his travels from 1887 to 1905. The museum tour concludes with the topic of Ischl at the turn of the century. Display boards, original posters, costumes, celebrities of the time (such as Alexander Girardi or Katharina Schratt) and life-size figures in original costumes meet museum visitors against the backdrop of the Ischl Esplanade.
