Solstice bonfire in the Salzkammergut
Around 20 June – when the longest day and the shortest night meet – mountain fires are lit in many places. And so an old custom is being rediscovered in this highly modern digital age: The summer solstice is an old custom from the Middle Ages. As early as the 14th century, fires were lit on the mountain ridges in Austria to give thanks for the rich harvest.

On the weekend around the longest day ("solstice"), the "mountains in flames" are on fire in the Salzkammergut every year. The solstice is traditionally celebrated around the longest day of the year. This time is also associated with other customs. One of the most beautiful fires is lit on the Feuerkogel in Ebensee.

On Saturday, 20st of June 2026, as every year, a large solstice fire will be lit on the Feuerkogel high plateau at 1,600 m above Lake Traunsee. An atmospheric start to summer is celebrated with a traditional solstice fire, regional live music and a great supporting programme for the whole family.
Some of the mountain inns offer live music and, as always, regional delicacies. There will also be musical accompaniment directly at the solstice fire from 21:15 hrs. Continuous cable car operation until 23:00 hrs..
