The Hand.Werk.Haus is situated in the rear wing of the Neuwildenstein Stately Home, and is the perfect venue for those who wish to spend a few hours of personal reflection in Advent. On Saturday 14th December (from 10.00 –18.00) and Sunday 15th December 2023 (10.00 – 17.00), craftsmen and women from the Salzkammergut will be hosting a festive Christmas Market. Over 20 of our most talented artists and craftsmen proudly present their products both inside and in the courtyard at the Neuwildenstein stately home.
As you make your tour of the Hand.Werk.Haus you will be able to visit, on both floors, stalls with goods for sale by hat makers, clock makers, carpenters, tailors, dressmakers and goldsmiths. Hopefully you will find one or two gift ideas to take home with you. This year for the first time, a glass blower will be demonstrating his talents. Visiting craftsmen from Styria will be offering culinary oil, wine and other food specialities for sale or just to sample. There will be traditional folk music, a real life nativity scene as well as events for children. "S'Gschäft" is situated on the ground floor. Here you can purchase a wide variety of products ranging from sheep's wool blankets to hats, clocks and jewellery, and from cots for dolls to candles and honey ...
Also on sale in the stately home are mulled wine, grilled sausages, smoked fish, coffee and cakes, roast chestnuts and other delicious treats. A lovely way to end your day is to visit the Exhibition of Cribs by a group from Bad Goisern in the Old People's Home.
Do you know "Advent"?
In German-speaking countries like Austria, Switzerland and Germany, there is a very special time: "Advent". These are the days leading up to Christmas, or more specifically, the four weeks leading up to Christmas. A sign of this special time is the traditional Advent wreath. A round wreath of pine branches with four candles. Each Sunday a candle is lit until all candles are lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent. During the Advent season, the Salzkammergut shines not only in the warm glow of lights, but also with its authentic and down-to-earth traditions such as the numerous Christmas markets and the rustic Krampus runs. And thanks to an appearance by Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz on Jimmy Fallon's talk show, Krampus has even made it to America. This and much more is tradition at its best. Want to know more?
