Idyllic World Heritage Advent in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut at your winter holiday around Lake Hallstatt

All hell breaks loose on the Market Place!

The Salzkammergut Krampus parade, in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut, is very special - spectators and participants often travel from far and wide to this impressive traditional event. From the variety of traditions of magnificent masks and costumes, from the various regions and states, those of the Salzkammergut-Krampus have become one of one of the most popular. Even many of the "Krampus fever" infected children have formed their own groups. St. Nikolaus brings gifts!

To be frightened: eerily beautiful masks

All little spectators can already get excited, because St. Nicholas will bring with him in his car, hundreds of small bags and will distribute them to all the good children. And those who can recite a poem for St. Nicholas, should certainly not need to fear the dark devil figures.

A holiday highlight that you should not miss!

It all starts on the Market Place as early as 17.00 hrs. where the Advent brass band sets the mood. To help keep the cold at bay there will be hot drinks, delicious punches and culinary delights at the tea stands. Continuing with the children's Krampus with St. Nicholas expected around 18.30 hrs. During the main Krampus parade one group of sinister figures will follow the next through the town centre. Each group, along with their special characteristics, will be introduced. Now it is really only: make note of the date and on 7th December go along to Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt to the Salzkammergut Krampus parade!

Krampus made it all the way to Hollywood

The dream factory also knows the rustic custom of the "Krampus". Thanks to an appearance by actor Christoph Waltz, known from the films "Inglourious Basterds" and "Django Unchained", in the popular American talk show by Jimmy Fallon. Here, the German-Austrian-American actor has already been talking about St. Nicholas' companion in the Alpine region for some time. And so a little bit of typical European tradition came across the Atlantic to America. You too can now meet the Krampus live. In the traditional "Krampus Run" in Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt. Be part of it. Just do it!

A bit of history and tradition
Whatwho is Krampus ?

"The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen). In the Alpine region the Krampus is represented by an incubus in company of St Nicholas. Traditionally, young men dress up as the Krampus in the first two weeks of December and particularly in the evening of 5th of December and roam the streets frightening children (and adults) with rusty chains and bells. In some rural areas also slight birching especially of young females by the Krampus is part of tradition." The present day Krampus costume consists of red wooden masks or Larve, black sheep's skin and horns. Considerable effort goes into the manufacture of the hand-crafted masks, as many younger adults in rural communities engage competitively in the Krampus events.
