New Year’s Music in Obertraun
From house to house - Obertraun welcomes the year 2024!
On the south-eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt, the old year is bid a traditional farewell and the New Year is welcomed in a very colourful way.
Committed to Tradition
Traditionally, the musicians of the Obertraun local music band end the old year on 29th and 30th December with the New Year's brass music from house to house. As early as 1897, a forerunner band under the melodious name "Alpenlust" introduced this custom.
The history of the unusual custom
Until the mid-1970s, the musicians were still out and about on New Year's Eve. For several decades now, the musicians - divided into three groups, in all weathers, whether it's heavy snowfall, rain, wind or freezing cold - have been wishing the population and guests of the Dachstein village musically on December 29th and 30th from the onset of dusk "a guats, nois Joahr" (Happy New Year).
