The last days on the mountain
The end of summer in the Salzkammergut is traditionally heralded with the cattle drive. Decorated with magnificent flowers, cows, sheep or even goats are driven from the alpine pastures and mountain meadows back down to the valley, where they are allowed to spend the winter months in their home stables. The cattle drives are a unique attraction, which are celebrated annually with festivals in the towns around the Salzkammergut lakes. And you can be there live again this year - provided the weather cooperates. You will experience the traditional thank you festival of the farmers for a good alpine summer, when the cows, sheep and goats return to the valley decorated with flowers and bells.
The cattle drive is part of the Harvest Festival in the Salzkammergut, which is celebrated with folk music, crafts, farmers' markets and culinary delights. Many spectators accompany the procession, and afterwards a big festival is celebrated in the village, often with hearty alpine music, accompanied by the alpine songs of the dairymaids.
