Counting sheep in Gosau
Counting sheep in Gosau
The sheep day, which is always the end of September, attracts many visitors from both home and abroad, up on to the Iglmoosalm high above the Gosau Valley in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut. Also for many locals, this annual event is not to be missed.
What is sheep mustering?
In spring various farmers drive their sheep from the Gosau valley up onto the lush pastures around Gosau. As there are no fences, the numerous lambs get mixed up over the summer months. Therefore their owners provide them with ear tags. When autumn arrives, the flocks of sheep are driven into an enclosure where the sheep mustering begins. Based on the ear tag, each sheep can now be re-assigned to their owner. What is important is the crier, who calls out the markings or numbers of the earmarks, in typical dialect.
On the slow train to the mustering
The Gosau slow train will bring you to the Iglmoosalm easily and without any effort. Departure is 9:00 hrsfrom the Gosau Tourist Office. The journey takes about 45 minutes. The sheep mustering begins at 10 a.m.. For those who prefer to hike, the hike to the Iglmoosalm, from the Pötschpass main road (B166) takes about 1 hour. During the mustering, a crier calls out the numbers of the ear tags of the sheep – in this way they get returned to their owners.
A pleasant day, with delicious Alm delicacies, awaits you on the Iglmoosalm. We wish you a memorable Alm experience in the Dachstein Salzkammergut holiday region.
