Christmas Vespers in Hallstatt

Attending a Christmas Vespers in Hallstatt can be a special experience that combines both religious and cultural aspects. Hallstatt itself is known for its picturesque lakeside location and long history, which makes the atmosphere even more unique for a Christmas Eve service. Hallstatt is known for its idyllic landscape and charming architecture. A service in this environment can be a particularly touching experience.

After the gift giving

When the Christmas presents have been unwrapped and the Christ Child is on his way home, the Catholic Church of Hallstatt invites you to the traditional Christmas Mass on Christmas Eve. Evening church attendance was therefore originally also the nocturnal Liturgy of the Hours sung on Holy Night, but today it is primarily used to refer to the Mass celebrated on the night of 24 to 25 December. Together with the celebration of the Easter Vigil, the Christmas Mass is one of the great nocturnal celebrations in the Catholic church year. Traditionally, it begins at midnight - in older times, however, the Mass also took place early Christmas morning.

How it all began...

The Christmas Mass is originally the liturgy of the hours (Matins and Lauds) sung by the church on Christmas Eve. Today, it usually refers to the Holy Mass, which is celebrated at Christmas on the night of December 24 to 25. The term is sometimes also used in Protestant congregations for the worship of Christmas Eve.

Highlight of the church year

The Christmas Mass, together with the celebration of the Easter Vigil, is one of the two major nocturnal celebrations in the church year. It traditionally begins at midnight, but in many parishes it can also start at 10 or 11 p.m. Until the 17th and 18th centuries, Mass usually took place early on Christmas morning. This custom can still be found today in a few Protestant communities, but especially in the Ore Mountains. The Mette is called "Uchte" in this context. In some places, the cantor, the Hebdomadar or the priest sings the solemn announcement of the birth of the Lord according to the Roman Martyrology immediately before the Christmas Mass, which originally belonged to the Prim – another indication of the character of the Christmas Mass as a night service with the celebration of Mass and elements from the Liturgy of the Hours.

Firmly scheduled

In many families, attending a service on Christmas Eve is part of the usual ritual, even regardless of regular congregational ties. The services on Christmas Eve are therefore the best attended throughout the year in all Christian denominations. In many congregations, Christmas services, nativity plays or "children's Christmas masses" take place in the late afternoon or early Christmas Eve. These are not Christmas masses, but Christmas vespers or – if they are Eucharistic celebrations – evening masses.

In some congregations, it is customary to place the figure of the baby Jesus – popularly known as the "Christ Child" – in the nativity scene when entering the congregation. The Christmas Mass is the first of the three Masses of Christmas, followed by the Shepherd's Mass and the Day Mass.

So much for the history of the Christmas mass, which will once again bring guests and locals together in Hallstatt at the beginning of the Christmas holidays. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a relaxing holiday season with your loved ones. Merry Christmas!
