Information on church history
The parish church in Hallstatt is a beautiful gem in the middle of the World Heritage Site. Known far beyond the borders of Austria is the late Gothic winged altar by Master Leonhard Astl, which is considered a donation of the miners and represents an art-historical peculiarity.
In the course of a 4000-year settlement history around the Hallstatt Salzberg, the history of the Catholic Church only has a share in the last quarter. The evidence of any Christianity among the Romans, who probably did their salt business here until the time of the Migration Period, cannot be provided from the existing finds. Deep darkness lies over the centuries of the great migration of peoples. After the first. Monasteries were founded in Mondsee in 748 and Kremsmünster in 777 and especially in Traunkirchen around 1000, the valley of the Traun was increasingly developed and also Christianized. Around the year 1050 it can probably be assumed that the first Christian community had a small Romanesque church by 1181 at the latest. The mighty tower from the 12th century still bears witness to this today.
The late Gothic then dared to build over the steeply sloping rock and by 1505 the church interior that exists today was completed. Soon after, the two-nave church was in the midst of the harsh religious wars and temporarily alternated its service between Catholics and Protestants. However, it always remained the favorite of all salt merchants and the rich gentlemen on the salt mountain, in the market or at court. Since 1939, the care of this gem has been entirely in the hands of the small parish community and friends and visitors. In 2002, the Catholic parish church was completely renovated!
